Job Role & Responsibilities
As a Senior Product Designer at theScore, I am responsible for leading the creative direction, visual language and execution of the App. Engaged with leadership and product owners during the design process to deliver features and updates to the app that meet both user goals and business needs. Achieved a better user experience through the use of best practices such as: design sprints, rapid prototyping and testing.
User Experience
Conducted user research of the existing product to learn more about user characteristics, needs and preferences. Choosing to keep the design simplistic, yet enticing; letting the content take the main stage. Remembered that the app is a utility and continuously worked towards connecting fans to what they love through providing a combination of real-time news, scores and alerts.
Visual Design
When I arrived, theScore's existing app was heavily skeuomorphic which gave way to a flat design that opposed all the “artificial” techniques. Therefore, my main goal was to implement a more user-centric design.
Maintained the dark colour scheme of the app to visually differentiate theScore from all other competing products. Emphasized the use of brand colours in the design language throughout the app to signify and coax interaction. I recognized that using an app to provide detailed stat pages has never been ideal to view on a mobile device, but a main goal of the app was to provide a layout that would give users a clear unobstructed view of the data with efficient use of the screen real estate.
Prototyping
Utilized many tools (Axure, Principle, Framer, Pixate and Invision) for usability testing with potential users. Performed testing to ensure that what we built is functioning as intended and determine any areas where additional improvements can be made to enhance the user experience.
Animations
Adding animations can push an app from being simply usable to being delightful. The product UI can benefit from adding clever transitions from one screen to another; allowing users to see the transition, without disturbing the user experience.
Production & Style Guide
Discussed all aspects of design, from the overall concept and down to the granular details with the technical leads to ensure that design proposals are also feasible in development. Because theScore is a mobile app, I worked closely with client developers from both Android and iOS platforms. Facilitated smooth and successful handovers between designer and developer by creating style guides with relevant information about colours, typography, interactions and patterns. Strong communication throughout the entire process ensures a high-quality final product; no matter what device a user is on.
